The 31-year-old American beat South Africa’s Chad le Clos in the 200m butterfly before helping the U.S win the relay.
Phelps, who currently is the most decorated Olympian of all time also brought his career tally to a total of 25 medals including two silver and two bronze.
Reclaiming the individual 200m butterfly title was Phelps’ main target in Rio following his dramatic defeat in London four years ago by the South African.
The final was supposed to be his farewell to the sport, having already announced his intention to retire after the 2012 Games, before later coming out of retirement in 2014.
