US approves sale of military planes to Nigeria

Nigeria

The United States has approved the sale of hi-tech planes to Nigeria expected to be used in the fight against Boko Haram.

The US congress was notified by the state department about the move expected to be effective after a 30-day review period.

Nigeria has been planning to buy about 12 embraer super Tucano aircrafts from Sierra Nevada Corporation in Colorado. The plan to sell military planes to Nigeria was suspended by former US president Barrack Obama after the Nigerian army was accused of bombing a camp near the Cameroon border.

Shortly after taking office Donald Trump promised to help Muhammadu Buhari in the fight against terrorist group Boko Haram.

The United States has however urged Buhari’s government to improve human rights practices by its forces and ensure that violators are punished.
