Zimbabwe
Born in 1924, a strong opponent to whites-only rule, jailed at one point for his political views. He rose to become leader of the only ruling party of his country ZANU-PF, Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front.
This was a summary of Robert Gabriel Mugabe’s trajectory before leading Zimbabwe to independence in 1980. Mugabe won elections and became Prime Minister. Seven years later he became president.
During his nearly four decades in charge, the now 93-year-old leader (the world’s oldest) has traveled the world and has met with many world leaders.
Mugabe has been to places and has met people. We present a series of photos chronicling who and who Mugabe has met – be it outside of Zimbabwe or those that he had hosted back in Harare.
