Serena and Venus Williams say they and the U.S. tennis team are ready for the Olympics despite health concerns in Rio while avoiding hot political issues back home.
In one of her comments about considering sitting out the Olympics to due to concerns surrounding the Games, including the Zika virus, Serena Williams said all athletes had to weigh their options.
“I weighed it very heavily. I think everyone here on the U.S. team weighed it heavily. And we really were able to educate ourselves on what to do and how to prepare and how to deal with everything that’s going down here,” she said.
Despite 2016 being an election year to the Americans, the duo was shy to comment on their political position regarding the presidential candidates. They said they were focused on the tennis tournament.
“Yeah well, USA Tennis is here to, hopefully medal. And who knows, maybe we could take more than one medal home. So I think that’s what we’re focused on right now. We can’t focus on any movement, especially anything happening in the States,” she said.
“I don’t involve myself in politics. I think it’s really important for me to really pass the message of love and unity across all nations,” she said
Number one ranked Serena Williams is hot off her seventh career Wimbledon crown, a title that ties her with Steffi Graf’s record of 22 Grand Slam titles.
