Macedonia’s border gate in Gevgelija remains closed after hundreds of migrants were returned to Greece after attempting to enter the country.
As the border remains closed, hopes of thousands of refugees who were hoping to start life afresh in Europe are slowly diminishing.
“There were hundreds of people, there were many women and children among the group, and there were also journalists and volunteers, who were accompanying them, who had also irregularly crossed the border, “Ljubibinka Brashnarska, UNHCR spokesperson.
According to news agency CTVNEWS European Union leaders who held a summit with Turkey said last Tuesday they hoped they had reached the outlines for a possible deal with Ankara to return thousands of migrants to Turkey, and said they were confident a full agreement could be reached at a summit next week.
“This group of people has been removed from the village, and they have not been brought to Vinojug reception centre,” added Brashnarska,
14 thousand people have have been reported to have graced the cold, rain, mud and waited days and weeks at the overflowing refugee camp in Idomeni near the border of Macedonia in a hope that their fate would be decided upon.
