Uber cars burned in Johannesburg

The taxi row in South Africa has culminated into violence as two Uber cars got burned on Thursday night in Johannesburg.

Police had already recorded clashes between the Uber and metered taxi drivers who accuse the American technology firm of unfair competition.

They say the technology based system offers abnormally low rates.

There were no victims in the incident.

Forces are deployed to protect commuters.

In April, several Uber vehicles were vandalized and its drivers attacked.

Since Uber launched in 2013, it has spread to eight African countries and they operate in 14 cities across the continent.

Some 4,000 drives are signed up with Uber in South Africa alone.

There has been protests in other countries against the Uber system that has made commuter transport much cheaper.
