'Fishing village' to 'coastal city': Twitter 'schools' U.K. portal about Tanzania capital

Tanzania

The United Kingdom (U.K.) based news portal, the Daily Mail, is receiving flak for referring to the Tanzanian capital, Dar Es Salaam, as a ‘fishing village.’

The description was used in the first paragraph of a story they filed about English Premier League (PL) side, Everton, who arrived in the country on Wednesday for a pre-season friendly game.

‘‘Everton touched down in Tanzania ahead of their pre-season friendly, with Wayne Rooney and Co welcomed by hoards of supporters as they arrived in the fishing village of Dar Es Salaam,’‘ the paragraph read.

Everton touched down in Tanzania ahead of their pre-season friendly, with Wayne Rooney and Co welcomed by hoards of supporters as they arrived in the fishing village of Dar Es Salaam.

But Maria Sarungi Tsehai, a communications expert and founder of the group Change Tanzania, took to Twitter to school the Daily Mail on the status of Dar Es Salaam – the capital town and largest port city of Tanzania.

The portal was forced to amend the said sentence replacing ‘fishing village’ with ‘coastal city.’ The rewritten paragraph read, ‘‘Everton touched down in Tanzania ahead of their pre-season friendly, with Wayne Rooney and Co welcomed by hoards of supporters as they arrived in the coastal city of Dare Es Salaam.’‘

Others joined in their condemnation of the portal blending the presentation of facts with humour at some point.
