Burkina Faso passes law to repossess land

Burkina Faso

The National Assembly of Burkina Faso unanimously adopted a bill aiming to recover more than 105,000 plots of land “illegally awarded” to dignitaries of the former regime of ousted President Blaise Compaoré.

The law on “the withdrawal of the plots illegally acquired by real estate developers and individuals over the period from 1995 to 2015” was adopted Thursday night by 108 members, during a plenary session behind closed doors.

“In view of the serious breach and the fact that we have detected more than 105,000 plots with irregularities, we have proposed a law of resolution on the withdrawal of these illegally occupied plots , the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee of inquiry, Boureima Barry told AFP.

According to him, the plots will be reintegrated into the public domain. The commission also urged the withdrawal of 20 reserves that shared between the mayors.
