Kenya opposition to seek prosecution of top election officials

Kenya

Kenya’s opposition, the National Super Alliance (NASA) will this week take legal action against election officials accused of malpractice during the August 8, presidential election.

Lawyers for the coalition are in the process of submitting the public prosecutors office with proof about how executives of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission rigged the election which was later nullified by the Supreme Court on September 1.

The five officials to be prosecuted by NASA include, the CEO of the IEBC, his deputy, the elections director, ICT head and the director of the legal services.

A top lawyer for the opposition said they are currently compiling the list of offences each of the officials committed as established by the Supreme Court in its report.

The five have been excluded from a team picked by the IEBC chairman to oversee the October 17 repeat election.

The coalition is also working with French civil society organisations to open charges against French firms Safran and Morpho accused of conniving with Kenya’s electoral body officials to rig the election.
