At least eight people were killed on Sunday in a stampede during a concert in a stadium in Benguela, a city in west-central Angola.
The police confirmed the deaths in a statement on Tuesday saying the reasons for their death during the Afro Music Channel festival are yet to be determined.
It added that investigations have been opened to shed light on the tragedy.
Meanwhile, an Angolan journalist Nelson Sul who was at the scene of the accident, said the toll was higher.
“There are more bodies in morgues in the city. The criminal investigation service told me that the death toll was 20,” he told AFP.
“There was panic at the end of the concert because the police were looking for criminals in the stadium and had locked the exits,” Nelson Sul added.
He also hinted that “the number of tickets sold exceeded the capacity of the stadium.”
The Afro Music Channel festival which was sold out at the 8000 capacity stadium brought together musicians nationwide.
