ICC ends Gabon mission citing contradictory information by parties

What really happened during the post-election crisis in Gabon? This is the question the ICC experts tried to answer. Their mission in Libreville ended on Thursday .

The experts met with ministers of the current government, as well as Jean Ping, the opponent who proclaims himself “elected president”. Both sides accusing the other of crimes against humanity.

The versions given by the government or by the opposition for example are contradictory. The same goes for the statistics of the number of victims. It ranged from 3 to 300 victims, so it’s still a huge difference, said head of the ICC delegation, Emeric Rogier.

The findings of this preliminary investigation will be forwarded to the ICC prosecutor’s office .This could lead to the initiation of an investigation of the alleged genocide committed during the protest against the re-election of President Ali Bongo in August 2016.
