Teenager Sella wins Africa Eco Race

Gev Teddy Sella has won the Africa Eco Race in the motorcycle category for the first time in his fledgling career following the final formality stage that took the competitors to Dakar in Senegal.

The 18-year old South African KTM rider was second on the final test of this years edition behind two-time defending champion Pal Anders Ullevalseter.

But as the rankings stopped after Friday’s stage 11 it didn’t matter and he was officially declared the overall champion on Saturday.

Sella won five of the 12 stages and ended the race 50 minutes and 12 seconds clear of his Norwegian rival Ullevalseter.

Meanwhile Vladimir Vasilyev became the first Russian winner of the car title.

Vasilyev led the standings from day one and won the opening three tests.

Despite winning only one more stage he managed to steadily increase his advantage throughout the two week challenge to eventually finish the race with a two hour and ten minute cushion over his closest rival Miroslav Zapletal from the Czech Republic.

It was Mini’s first title in the race.

Andrey Karginov added the Africa Eco Race trucks title to his 2014 Dakar Rally victory.

The Russian dominated the class to hand Kamaz a fourth overall victory from the past five editions.

Such was his performance throughout the race Karginov’s overall time placed him in the top five of the cars and trucks combined.
