Nigeria: Niger Delta Avengers claim responsibility for southern Niger attacks

The Niger Delta Avengers have claimed responsibilty for about five attacks targeting oil companies since Friday in Nigeria’s southern Delta.

The group said it had issued prior warning to oil companies to stop ongoing repair works.

This is the first time the avengers are claiming responsibility since June 16.

Frequent attacks by the group had reduced oil production in Nigeria which had started rising last week as the number of attacks reduced.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation had also announced that repair works had contributed in boosting oil production in the past few weeks.

Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari held discussion on Thursday with some community leaders from the Niger Delta during which they brainstormed on possible ways to appease the militants.

The militants have been requesting a share of Nigeria’s wealth which makes up 70 percent of Nigeria’s national income.
