Dozens of people have been killed after powerful explosions ripped through Bujumbura following a fire at a military arsenal late Tuesday night. The blasts originated from the main ammunition depot in Musaga, sending shockwaves and widespread panic across the city.
Residents described a night of terror as projectiles rained down on nearby neighborhoods. One witness from Nyakabiga said explosions erupted while families were inside their homes, forcing them to take cover as debris scattered in all directions. Another resident, Anitha Niyonsaba, recounted how a projectile tore through her roof, pierced the ceiling, and struck a wall near where she had been resting moments before.
Officials say the disaster was caused by an “electrical accident,” but the fire quickly escalated, triggering a wave of explosions that spread beyond the base.
The Musaga arsenal is located in a densely populated area, heightening the impact. It sits next to the Higher Institute for Military Cadres (ISCAM), as well as major army logistics depots, Muha military camp, and the central Mpimba prison.
