Beninese took to the streets to protest against "bad governance"

Benin

Beninese president, Patrice Talon , faces social unrest just days after returning from medical leave.

The trade unions at the port of Cotonou initiated a two-day strike on Thursday, nearly a thousand people demonstrated on the same day ,calling on the opposition coalition and civil society to pour out into the streets.

They are protesting against what they call “bad governance”.

“The people do not want the governance where the country is run like a private enterprise and where citizens are treated like employees where the boss doesn’t have to render accounts to them.” The people no longer want a violation of public freedom. The people do not want the prefects that undermine the freedom and the welfare of the citizens. “The people do not want the privatization of the key sectors of the economy”,said a protester, Jean Chikambure Tawab.

The protesters also asked the president to fulfill some of his campaign promises, one year after his election. A year after elections voters still await his delivery on electoral promises.
