Niger’s opposition coalition is calling for the release of presidential contender Hama Amadou, jailed for alleged baby-trafficking charges.
They are calling on President Issouffou to free him ahead of the second round of presidential polls slated for March 20.
“We demand Hama’s release. If President Mahamadou Issoufou has any pride, all he has to do is free him and face him fair and square,” opposition coalition spokesman Ousseini Salatou.
He was speaking after visiting the former Prime Minister and national assembly president in jail.

Amadou, who campaigned behind bars has denounced the legal process against him terming it as a ploy to sideline him from the elections.
Issouffou won the first round of the polls on February 21 having garnered 48.4 percent of the votes while Amadou got 17.4 percent.
