UN appoints former Haiti PM Garry Conille as Resident Coordinator in Kenya
Conille took his post on Wednesday, according to a press release.
"Mr. Conille brings over 20 years of experience in international development, humanitarian affairs and public administration to the position, with a strong record of leadership across the United Nations system," the statement read.
The 60-year-old politician has worked with the United Nations since 1999, including as Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
He was also the UN Resident Coordinator in Burundi and then Jamaica between 2017 and 2022.
In Haiti, Conille first served as prime minister from 2011 to 2012.
He was brought back to the position in 2024 as part of the country’s Transitional Presidential Council, which hoped to bring back political stability.
Conille’s second premiership also saw the first deployments of Kenyan troops to the country, as part of a force mandated by the UN to help Haiti restore security amid acute gang violence.
Conille was succeeded by business Alix Didier Fils-Aimé who remains Haiti's acting prime minister and retains full executive power to this day.
In his new role in Kenya, Conille is expected to work on implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.
