Former Chadian president, Hissene Habre, has been sentenced to life in prison on Monday for war-crimes and crimes against humanity during his eight-year military rule.

The sentence was handed by a special court, Special African Chamber (CAE), created by the African Union and Senegal, where he was arrested in 2013 while on exile.
Proceedings delayed as a result of Habre’s refusal to recognise the CAE and sometimes was forced to appear in court.
Habre’s lawyers now have two weeks to launch an appeal.
The 74-year-old, who was toppled in a coup in 1990, was convicted of rape, sexual slavery and ordering killings and torture of thousands of political opponents from 1982 to 1990.
