A service station in the upscale neighbourhood of Maadi in Egypt’s capital Cairo, is setting a new trend in the country.
All female crew serving clients in Egypt's filling station defy stereotypes
The filling station has hired seven women to work in what has been, until now, a male-dominated field.
However, it hasn’t been easy for the women who work in the filling station.
The stereotypes associated with women who venture into male-dominated areas is among the challenges they encounter.
Additionally, being a petrol station attendant is considered a low income job in Cairo.
Nonetheless, the women are very optimistic about the new venture.
“This is a new job and a new idea. When we first started to work here, we were very apprehensive about what people might say. But after our ten-day training, we started working very well,” said Abrar Mohamed, one of the attendants.
In a country where youth unemployment stands at about 26 percent, this initiative stands out.
