Malagasy farmers turn to Khat farming for quick income as poverty bites

In the 90’s Malagasy authorities promoted Khat as a cash crop in areas like Diego Suarez, or Antsiranana in the north of Madagascar. As a result, food production declined as farmers turned to the stimulant plant to get rich. In turn it has contributed to rising cases of addiction and food insecurity.
