HYROX is gaining momentum across Asia, drawing everyone from elite athletes to first-time competitors into a fast-growing fitness phenomenon. In Bangkok, packed training sessions are preparing participants for a race combining running and functional workouts.

HYROX combines eight one-kilometre runs with eight functional workouts, testing endurance, strength and stamina in a standardized format.

Unlike traditional endurance events, participants complete the same challenges regardless of ability, making performances easy to compare from one race to the next.

For competitors such as Wiphada Chanchana, who is preparing for her first race, the appeal goes beyond fitness.

“I like the community the most actually because I've never trained like this before,” she says, crediting friends and coaches for pushing her during training.

Social media fuels the boom

Founded in Germany in 2017, HYROX held its first race a year later with around 650 competitors.

Its popularity in Asia has surged since arriving in Hong Kong in 2022, with social media helping drive interest among people who had never considered competing.

Bangkok trainer Worahop Cory Fuangkhajornfung says the event has become difficult to miss online.

“There's no way you can avoid HYROX online and that's why a lot of people want to try it out,” he says.

Bangkok becomes a fitness hub

A HYROX event held in Bangkok in March attracted more than 17,500 competitors, according to organisers.

The next edition, running from August 13 to 16 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, is expected to draw even more participants.

HYROX says it now has around 1.5 million athletes worldwide, reflecting the rapid expansion of a competition that blends mass participation with elite sport.

Community drives participation

For many athletes, the attraction lies in the flexibility of the format.

Competitors can race individually, as a pair or in groups, while categories allow participants to compete against others with similar abilities.

For Kristiana Thomas, who is preparing for her third HYROX race, the standardized format provides an extra incentive.

“I like that it's quite comparable so if you do one this time you can try and beat it next time,” she says.

From triathlon to HYROX

Fumiaki Nakamura switched to HYROX after training for triathlons became increasingly demanding.

He says the simpler setup appealed to him, particularly compared with the equipment required for cycling.

Social media also played a role in his decision to try the sport after seeing footage from a previous Bangkok race.

Training for the next level

The Bangkok event carries added significance for elite competitors, serving as an official qualification pathway for the 2027 PUMA HYROX World Championships in Hong Kong.

But coaches say success is not reserved for professional athletes.

South African trainer Vee Lumley says HYROX has a broad appeal because people with different fitness levels can take part.

“Everyone's able to do it. It's friendly to everybody,” she says.

Running is the key

For those hoping to compete at the highest level, Cory says one skill matters above all.

“Running. That's it,” he says, arguing that strong running ability combined with basic strength training can provide the foundation for success.

As HYROX continues its rapid expansion across Asia, Bangkok is emerging as one of its major hubs — bringing together seasoned athletes, fitness enthusiasts and newcomers eager to see what they can do.
