DRC: New cabinet sworn in despite political impasse [The Morning Call]

The new government in the Democratic Republic of Congo was sworn into office on Wednesday. Though opposition parties in the country have decribed the new cabinet as one that undermines the December 31, 2016 agreement.

Prime Minister Bruno Tshibala whose appointment continues to anger several opposition figures outlined four priority areas of his new government of national unity in his address.

According to him, these areas are deeply entrenched in last year’s political accord and its terms. The first is “to organise credible, free, transparent and peaceful elections, at an agreed date”. He also cited arresting the country’s declining economy and improving the living conditions of the population as the second and third priority of his government. And the final one “will be to improve security throughout the country.”
