Nigeria police unit accused of torture [The Morning Call]

A Nigerian police unit set up to deal with violent crime have denied claims by rights group amnesty international they have been systematically torturing detainees in its custody as a means of extracting confessions and lucrative bribes.

The special anti-robbery squad or SARS officers amnesty said have been reported by lawyers, human rights defenders, journalists and victims testimonies for regularly demanding bribes, steal and extort money from criminal suspects and their families.
