Schalke defender Matip joins Liverpool

Joel Matip is set to join Liverpool at the end of the season

The 24 year old Schalke defender will play for the Reds on a free transfer when his current contract with the Bundesliga side expires.

The German-born player becomes the second Cameroon international to represents the Reds in the premier league.

“I have always said that there is only one reason I would leave Schalke – to experience something completely new. For that reason, I never considered a move to another Bundesliga club. Even though the decision wasn’t easy, I am certain that this is the right moment for me to take the next step in my career,” Matip was quoted in Schalke 04 website.

The central defender started playing for the German club at the tender age of nine making an impressive 239 appearances in all competitions.

“Schalke 04 will always be like my family. I have always been very proud to play for this fantastic club…I will give my all in the coming months to ensure that we get the most we can out of this season. I owe that to both the fans and my team,” Matip said.

Matip has 27 caps for Cameroon and played for his country at the past two FIFA World Cup finals.

Liverpool had been eyeing Matlip since January but failed to secure him during the transfer window period. He becomes Juergen Klopp’s third signing.
