Obama's final State of The Union address

U.S President Barack Obama delivered his last State of the Union address and focused on the issues of economy, technology, democracy and security of the American people, in what he referred to as the four big questions.

He defended his legacy in his speech by defending the progress he made over the last four years and called on Congress to wage war on terrorist gangs like Islamic State (ISIS) or ISIL.

“Priority number one is protecting the American people and going after terrorist networks. Both al Qaeda and now ISIL pose a direct threat to our people, because in today’s world, even a handful of terrorists who place no value on human life, including their own, can do a lot of damage. They use the Internet to poison the minds of individuals inside our country; they undermine and destabilise our allies.”

President Obama defended his economic record and said that the U.S.A has the strongest and most durable economy in the world, with the creation of more than 14 million new jobs.

“Anyone claiming that America’s economy is in decline is peddling fiction. What is true  —  and the reason that a lot of Americans feel anxious  —  is that the economy has been changing in profound ways, changes that started long before the Great Recession hit and haven’t let up,” he said.

He also called on all Americans to resist calls to stigmatize Muslims, by taking a swipe at Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, who has been criticised for his remarks on the religious group.

“When politicians insult Muslims, whether abroad, or fellow citizens, when a mosque is vandalized, or a kid is called names, that doesn`t make us safer,” President Obama added.

Obama is expected to leave office early next year as the American elections are slated for later this year.
