CHAN 2016: Hosts Rwanda through to quarter-finals

Hosts Rwanda have become the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Chan 2016.

They beat Gabon 2-1 in a match in the capital, Kigali.

Ernest Sugira was the toast for the home side notching a double infront of a parked Amahoro Stadium that propelled the side to the last eight of the tournament.

“Today (Wednesday) was another great day for Rwandan people. We managed a sweet win against a strong Gabonese side and also qualified for the quarters of the tournament for the first time in history,” said Rwanda coach Johnny McKinstry.

“It was a tough game, we played so well in the first half but the second half was a bit different because Gabon grew into the game, and the last ten minutes were very difficult as my players started to get tired.”

Rwanda is the first East African country to host the second most glamorous event on the continent.

Amavubi made her debut at the biannual continental showpiece in 2011 in Sudan but failed to go past the group stage after failing to win a single game.
