Demonstrations in Sudan

Demonstrations in Sudan

With regard to the demonstrations taking place in Sudan where thousands of citizens are calling for political change in the country, the Spanish Government urgently calls on the government, the army and security forces to show control and avoid any excessive use of force, to allow citizens to continue to demonstrate peacefully and for the arrests of political leaders, journalists and demonstrators to cease

It is equally important that the opposition maintains the peaceful nature of the demonstrations. Sudan is currently at an historic crossroads and only the Sudanese citizens and authorities, through gestures from both sides, can, and must, seek a peaceful outcome.

The Sudanese authorities have a double responsibility: towards the citizens and towards the region. Thus, the Spanish Government hopes that the situation will lead to a peaceful, credible, legitimate and inclusive process that allows Sudan to implement the political and economic reform that the country needs and that citizens are demanding on the streets.
