Odinga attends burial of three protesters killed by police

Kenya

Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga on Friday attended the burial of three Kenyans killed during the recent protests to call for electoral reforms in Kenya.

Addressing the crowd, Raila Odinga praised the fallen for their bravery insisting their only crime was the courage to exercise their democratic right.

“We are saying goodbye today to three Kenyans who were shot by trigger happy police officers, these people’s only crime is that they were exercising they democratic right to demonstrate against an election which is being imposed on the people of Kenya against their wishes,” Kenyan opposition leader, Raila Odinga said.

A joint report from Amnesty International and Human Rights watch published few days back said Kenyan police have killed at least 33 people, possibly as many as 50, and injured hundreds more in some parts of Nairobi, the capital, in response to protests following the August 8, 2017 elections.

Rights researchers found that although police behaved appropriately in some instances, in many others they shot or beat protesters to death.

Kenya’s police department has defended their intervention as lawful and proportionate geared towards protecting people and property.
