Ghana

The overall best teacher in Ghana for 2017 happened to be a Primary 1 instructor. Madam Faustina Cobson was adjudged the National Best Teacher as Ghana joined the world to mark the World Teachers Day.

The state-owned Ghana News Agency, reports that the 41-year-old is a teacher at the Richard Aquaye Memorial School, located in a suburb of the capital, Accra.

As part of her prize, she was given a three bedroom house plus a cash sum of 50,000 cedis (about $11,300) and a life insurance package.

She expressed delight at winning the award which had usually been picked up by teachers in upper primary and high school level.

The event held in the Eastern regional capital of Koforidua saw top sector ministry and education officials in attendance. It was the 23rd National Teachers Day celebration in the country.

The first runner-up went to another female who teaches in the Volta region of the country. She also got a cash prize of 110,000 ($25,000) and a life insurance whiles the second runner-up went to Joseph Agbotsa who got a car plus 20,000 cedis and life insurance cover.

Teachers have long been pushing for government to declare the day a holiday. They have often argued that Farmers Day which falls on the first Friday of every December is declared a national holiday and observed as such.
