Mugabe is Zimbabwe's Goliath, youth urged to be his 'David'

The David – Goliath references is still ongoing in Zimbabwe after President Robert Mugabe first used it last week during an address in New York during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Mugabe’s target was United States president, Donald Trump who he described as the ‘Giant gold Goliath.’ On arrival in Harare from New York, he was given the ‘David’ title for standing up to Goliath Trump.

Back home, young Zimbabweans are being encouraged to be Davids and to see a Goliath in their 93-year-old leader and other old guards. Protest pastor, Evan Mawarire, who is currently facing charges of incitement and subversion says the youth must stand up for their futures.

“David took Goliath head on, he was bold; the youth that is weak, that is afraid, that is timid and hides will not achieve anything in future … you have the ability to face these things that these people (ZANU PF) can’t face, why because it is your future that is at stake,” Mawarire said at a recent event.

What Mugabe said to Trump

The David – Goliath reference was contained in a part of Mugabe’s UNGA address where he called on Trump to ‘blow his Trumpet’ in the interest of global peace after referring to him as the ‘giant gold Goliath.’

“Some of us were embarrassed if not frightened by what appeared to be the return of the biblical giant gold Goliath. Are we having the return of Goliath to our midst who is threatening the extinction of other countries?” he said.

“May I say today, the President of the United States Mr Trump; please blow your trumpet. Blow your trumpet in a musical way towards the values of unity, peace, cooperation, togetherness, dialogue which we have always stood for and which is in the charter of the United Nations,” he added.

He went ahead to issue a caution to Trump: “We have resisted it when it was in the form of imperialism as we fought for our own independence, our own culture, our own sovereignty to be masters of our own destiny. That’s why we call ourselves free today because the monster of imperialism was defeated by us”.

Before taking the podium to deliver his address, Mugabe made the headlines when photos showed him ‘resting his eyes’ on the first day of the summit. Incidentally, it was at the time that Trump was delivering his first address to the packed U.N. hall.
