TP Mazembe part ways with coach Thierry Froger

Democratic Republic Of Congo

Frenchman Thierry Froger has left Democratic Republic of Congo’s TP Mazembe by mutual consent after just over one month in charge.

The Congolese side based in the southern city of Lubumbashi are among 16 clubs demoted from the Champions League to the Confederation Cup last weekend after suffering round-of-32 loss to Zimbabwe’s CAPS United, and the club said coach Froger had not achieved his goal of reaching the CAF Champions League quarter-finals.

Mazembe who are the second most successful in CAF competitions with 10 titles, nine less than Al Ahly of Egypt, will now face JS Kabylie of Algeria in the Confederation Cup play-offs.

Kabylie on their side have won six African titles, and the pairing is a repeat of a 2010 CAF Champions League semi-final won 3-1 on aggregate by Mazembe.

The first legs are scheduled for April 7-9 with the return matches a week later where the 16 overall winners will qualify for the group stages.
