South African university protest leader arrested on Wits campus

South Africa

A former Witswatersrand (Wits) University SRC president and a leader of the student protests against fee hikes has been arrested on the university campus on Sunday.

Mcebo Dlamini’s arrest was confirmed to reporters by himself after South African police announced the “arrest of a 32-year-old male at a residence on the Wits University campus at about 01:00,” News24 reported.

“The arrest was effected as part of ongoing investigations into recent violence, criminality and acts of intimidation,” police spokesperson Brigadier Sally De Beer said.

The SRC of the university has posted on its Facebook page that it is putting together a legal team for Mcebo Dlamini.

They are also mobilizing students to join their former leader at the police station.

The actual charge against Mcebo Dlamini is not yet known but reports say it is related to an assault on a police officer.
