Free public wifi for Ugandans

Uganda

Uganda’s government has announced it will provide free WiFi in the capital, Kampala and parts of Entebbe from October 1.

The Uganda media center tweeted an initial coverage map.

The country’s Minister for ICT Frank Tumwebaze said the initiative will give users open access to the Internet but with some restrictions.

The free service he said will only be available from 6pm to 6am on weekdays and 3pm on Saturdays to 6am on Mondays for weekends.

Uganda’s National Information Technology Authority will implement the service using the bandwidth of some ministries and departments.

Revelers attending the Kampala City Festival will be one of the first to enjoy the service which is expected to be officially launched at the end of October.

Uganda joins Kenya and Rwanda, neigbours in east Africa who also offer free public WiFi services.
