Besigye 'is used to prison as his second home' - Opposition leader

Uganda

Supporters of the Uganda’s main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) on Tuesday visited former party president Kizza Besigye in the Luzira Prison where he is being held on treason charges.

The 12-member FDC group was led by new leader of the opposition, Winnie Kiiza who said the four time challenger of incumbent Yoweri Museveni was doing well and that he is used to prison as a shelter.

‘‘Kizza Besigye is well and he says he is used to prison as his second home,’‘ she told reporters outside the prison after they had concluded their visit.

“Besigye (is) not happy with the arrests of opposition MPs and supporters, and their delayed trial,” she further bemoaned.

Dr Besigye was arrested and charged with treason before being remanded after a video clip in which he (Dr Besigye) was sworn-in as president circulated online. He is also facing another charge of disobeying lawful authority.

A court last week ordered that his trial would be in court quashing a request by the prosecution to have it in the prison because according to them, Besigye was a security threat.

He appeared last week in court with the case adjourned till later this week.
