My connection to Africa
After a 7-year specialization in Latin American development issues, my interest shifted to the African continent in the early 1970s, only to stay there. Since then I have lived in four African countries: Burkina Faso, Liberia, Mali and Senegal, worked in almost 30 countries and travelled in every region of the continent. The history and cutures of the peoples of the continent are my passion and I have specialized in the economics of African countries. On top of my favorite countries are the West African countries of Mali and Liberia.
For me, four words characterize 'Africa': Strong People - Weak States. I am obliged to Gerda Dommerholt who was the very first person to summarize the potential and the weakness of the continent in this way.
