- Biography
- My name is Savo Heleta. I am originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina. I was thirteen when the civil war broke out in my country in the early 1990s. With my family, I survived two years of terror, starvation, detention, and dehumanization.
In 2006, I graduated from Saint John’s University, Minnesota, USA, majoring in history and business management. I hold a Masters Degree in Conflict Transformation and Management from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
I am the author of Not My Turn to Die: Memoirs of a Broken Childhood in Bosnia (March 2008, AMACOM Books, New York). In the book, I give my own testimony about the suffering in my childhood and demonstrate my personal struggle and search for the strength to choose peace, reconciliation, and hope over hatred and revenge. - My connection to Africa
- In my postgraduate studies, I focus on ethnic conflict, conflict between states, and interstate conflict. My specialty are South Africa, Rwanda, Darfur, Sudan. Click here to read my academic research.
