Kenya: Teachers strike stand off
The nationwide teachers strike in Kenya stretched into its first week on Friday with no signs of teachers backing down. The Teachers Service Commission says the current teachers shortage has reached a crisis level and immediate measures to ensure quality education is required fast. But the teachers have vowed not to accept any deals short of employing 28,000 teachers on permanent terms. - The government held a high level crisis meeting on Wednesday evening to moderate ways of halting the ongoing nationwide teachers strike. The evening meeting was chaired by the Country's President Mwai Kibaki and attended by the Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Minister for Education.
