- 16 May 2007, by Nana Kofi Acquah in Accra, Ghana. One thing I love to bits about Nigeria, is how they welcome a guest. Normally, a driver from the agency I"m visiting comes to the airport holding a placard with my name inscribed on it. If they haven"t picked me up before, and haven"t received detailed briefing, they always tend to think Nana is the name of a woman till they meet me. After the initial confusion is cleared, then you discover how hospital and warm Nigerians can be. The driver makes sure my luggage is secure in his car and 'vrooom" we go. It"s all action in Lagos. He wants to be sure there"s no gang trailing us so he drives like mad... and at this point, it is almos…Moves to end Ghana’s energy crisis
- 16 May 2007, by Nana Kofi Acquah in Accra, Ghana. The government of Ghana has totally changed their strategic approach to the energy crisis in the face of the current worsening energy crisis. Initial name calling among the two competing political parties, the incumbent National Patriotic Party (NPP) and their rivals the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has finally given way to openly looking at the problem at stake and finding plausible ways of solving them. Ghana requires approximately $4.5 billion in the short to medium term to meet the infrastructure requirements for reliable and efficient production and supply of energy, according to the Minister for Energy, Mr. Kofi Adda. He as…[Nana Kofi Acquah weblog] Ghana@50 celebrations - the aftermath
- 10 April 2007, by Nana Kofi Acquah in Accra. Ghana celebrated her 50th Independence Anniversary with grandeur. The hope of the people was revived again. For the first time in a long time, Ghanaians looked beyond their political affiliations and came together to dance and celebrate for weeks, climaxing it all on the 6th of March 2007 with parades in every regional capital. The hope that died with Nkrumah"s overthrow was reborn, every high street was decorated with a billboard of Kufuor trying to snatch a piece of Nkrumah"s glory. Every streetlight was decorated with the famous red, yellow, green and black colours of Ghana"s flag (though they were stolen and sold or used as bed sheets the ver…Finally, Kinz Telecom nails Westel
- 6 April 2007, by Nana Kofi Acquah. For three good years, the saga raged. The Government of Ghana wasn't satisfied with the performance of Western Telesystems (WESTEL), Ghana's second national telecommunications operator, so they bought their American partners out. Now the question was, who gets to buy themselves in? Many names came up. A couple of weeks ago, Globacom was so rumor-mongered, I wrote about them... and finally, it turns out Kinz Telecom and Etisalat Communications of the UAE have won the race to secure a 66.7% stake in Westel.Dr Salieh El Hassan, Chairman of Kinz International Group, is reported to have told TeleGeography (www.telegeography.com), this week: 'We woul…Portraits of the Aged
- 27 March 2007, by Nana Kofi Acquah in Accra, Ghana. When you are a 25 years old young man whose younger brother just died of Tuberculosis; the same disease had killed your mum and will kill you in about a year's time, what do you think about? These are the circumstances that compelled John Keats, one of England's most prominent Romantic Poets to write his famous Odes. After pondering on life, and what really is important, he concluded in his Ode on a Grecian Urn, that: 'Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is allYe know on earth, and all ye need to know.' In many cultures today, aging is no longer regarded a privilege. It's actually treated as a crime. In Ghana, 90% or…[Nana Kofi Acquah weblog] Portraits of the Aged

- 21 March 2007, by Nana Kofi Acquah in Accra. Future of Ghanaian advertising? Do ad agencies exist in Ghana? How come one never hears of Ghana at Cannes Lions, the Clios, Art Directors Club Awards, BAFTA, or any important Advertising Awards ceremony?Well, before you get so pessimistic let me tell you there are over 100 registered advertising agencies in Ghana but just about five are really calling the shots... and there are a few serious guys who might be joining or beating the big shots soon; and for good reason too. Colin Charles, the former Creative Director of Lowe Lintas Ghana, and currently Managing Director of Icon believes "Ghana will be the centre of excellence for West…Re-redenomination of the Ghanaian Cedi
- 8 January 2007, by Nana Kofi Acquah in Accra, Ghana. "Ghanaian Hospitality". Have you ever experienced that? When you do, it would make you feel generous, and that"s where you"d have to be careful because you could be giving out far more than you intend. The Ghanaian Cedi will be re-denominated this year with ˘10,000 equaling ˘1. If this happens, it would make this currency Ghana"s third cedi for the records after two incidents of currency confiscation along the way. The purchasing power of the old and new currencies stays the same; the cedi is not being devalued or re-valued. It just being re-redenominated. And since both old and new currency will be in circulation for a while, you a…MTN and Vodacom for a final show down in Ghana?
- 15 December 2006, by Nana Kofi Acquah in Accra, Ghana. Months after MTN bought Areeba- Ghana"s leading telecommunication network, current reports indicate that Vodacom of South Africa is gunning for Ghana Telecom, the mother company of Onetouch, Areeba"s direct competitor. The government of Ghana, which holds 100 percent shares in Ghana Telecom, after buying off the 30 percent Telecom Malaysia held, advertised internationally for an advisor to commence a privatization process in Ghana Telecom (GT) after terminating the management contract between the Government of Ghana (GoG) and Telenor of Norway after accusations that over the period of GoG's relationship with them, the 22 Norwegians car…MTN merger with Areeba: Implication for business in Ghana, West Africa
