GEOSS: solution for Africas disasters?
- During a recent meeting that took place in Uganda’s capital Kampala, GEO announced promotion of a more timely acquisition and dissemination of relevant observations and information through the use of the Global earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS).GEO also called on African countries to embrace the Earth Observation in addressing natural and human induced hazards. GEO includes over 70 member countries, 16 being African countries, the European Commission and more than 46 participating organisations. African countries stand to benefit from the Earth Observation in such a way that once in function, over the ten years countries will have nine societal benefit areas. These include…This is NOW
- “So what do you do now?”
That is a question I have had to put up with since October last year, when I threw in the towel, wrote my resignation letter and decided that no matter what, I will not get career satisfaction working full time for a media house in Uganda. So began the long ride down freelance road filled with months and months of no work and no earning. For those who do not work full time in Ugandan media, the job I once held seemed like the perfect one; after all I was a columnist who was read. And that for any journalist is a great achievement.. But that was not all, seeing my name in print for many meant I was happy, earning a lot of money and rich! Well for about Uganda Sh…[Uganda Weblog] In defense of a forest
18 April 2007, by Elizabeth Kameo. I woke up to news headlines all over the city bill copies announcing that an Asian businessman who wants to destroy Mabira Forest Uganda"s biggest Tropical Rainforest is come up with demands if he is to leave our forest alone. Just how much more can Ugandans take from investors who are hell bent on destroying whatever little is left of the country in terms of natural resources and its beauty. Now here was a man who made a "deal" with President Yoweri Museveni that got him 7,100 hectares of lands making demands in a country that is not his if the owners of the country do not want him to destroy their natural resources. And for US$200 million, Mahendra …Celtel East Africa goes beyond communications
- March 9, by Elizabeth Kameo. The university environments around Uganda and East Africa are today are filled with excitement and a challenging air thanks to a new educational challenge launched by Celtel East Africa this week across universities in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. The best university will win and further defend its stand as the best in the region. Ugandans cannot wait to see if the country"s leading university; Makerere will be able to defend its slogan of "80 Years of Excellence".Over ten years ago when the Amsterdam based telecommunication company launched services in Uganda, it was basically a telecom company, one that served the elite, top and middle class clients who could…The Last King of Scotland: Not many Ugandans impressed
- 23 February 2007, by Elizabeth Kameo in Kampala. When the shooting of the movie 'The Last King Of Scotland' began over two years ago on location in Uganda, there was a rush of wanna be actors and actresses hoping to make it big in Hollywood. "For me this is a dream come true, I am hoping I can be on screen long enough to be noticed by a movie maker and maybe then I could get some movie jobs," said wanna be actor known as JJ at the time. That was in 2005 at the shooting of the movie at Makerere University. Now that the movie is out, JJ only gets to be shown for a split second in the movie; you have to know him to recognise him. He is among the many doctors in the airport scene who treat pass…[Elizabeth Kameo weblog] Invasion of the Chinese: Do we need to think twice?
- 13 November 2006. Suddenly it is the big news. I cannot switch on any international news television channel without being accosted with the news of China moving in on the African markets. Interviews with Africans doing one thing or another in China and praising China's new found interest in Africa. My president (Museveni) even got himself time on the big one: CNN. They did not ask him about his leadership skills or the ongoing peace talks. The journalist went on and on about the whole Chinese thing and what good it would do or not. Of course it was right during the peak time when they had that thing going on in South Africa about China and their role in development on the African cont…[Weblog Uganda] Independent, Really?
- 12 October 2006, By Elizabeth Kameo, Kampala - Last Monday Ugandans celebrated 44 years of independence. Like many my age, I chose to skip the rather childish celebration at the famous Kololo Airstrip, and instead dwelt on reasons why we should not even be bothering. After all as far as independence goes, I reckon there is nothing independent about Uganda. And then I thought of the hustle I would go through getting searched just because the President is at the function. See when a president is some place in Uganda; it is nightmarish to go there. You get searched like you are a terrorist, you do not get to take your phone, anything that looks suspiciously like a bomb even a pen, you do…
