"Only 5 to 6 percent of the countries have made huge progress. We are far from the target of 15% budget allocation pledged by African heads of state during their 2001 summit in Abuja," Kazatchkine said.
Addressing a news conference here Monday, he appealed to the international community to support the Africa's efforts to tackle the health problems facing the continent.
"Africa is experiencing global health problems. We therefore need comprehensive solutions that provide consistent funding. For instance the Global Fund is providing 70% of the funds needed to fight tuberculosis," he said.
"The international community must mobilise further to help Africa tackle diseases. Africans must set the example by allocating a more significant budget share to the health sector," Kazatchkine stressed, while calling on African leaders to exert every effort to meet the health care delivery goals. 27 March 2007 - PANA
