Kinshasa: Only 4% of HIV/AIDS infected persons have access to antiretroviral treatment in the DR Senegal.
According to UNAIDS document that reached PANA on Wednesday."The situation is very precarious and means of communication to make drugs reach patients have deteriorated to a large extent," lamented Bernadette Mulelebwe, national director of the Femme Plus Foundation, a local NGO specialised in the supervision of people living with HIV/AIDS.
However, the situation is stabilising and some HIV-positive people are trained, in such a way that they have a place in the reconstruction effort and might work, especially after DR Congo has lost many executives to HIV/AIDS, Mulelebwe reassured. With 60 million inhabitants including 3 million HIV-positive people in the country, 300 thousand people are expected to be put on antiretrovirals (ARV).
"Even when the Global Fund to fight AIDS intervenes financially, there is a problem of distribution circuit," said Mulelebwe, who notes that international funding represent an indispensable manna but never a guarantee. The release of the UNAIDS fund was suspended last January on grounds of state mismanagement. 5 April 2007 - PANA
