Ivorian wins Best Blog award

Ivory Coast's freelance journalist, Israel Yoro Guebo, has been adjudged the 2008 Best Francophone Blogger at the fifth edition of the BOBS Awards in Germany some weeks back.

In selecting his blog the jury said: “A good example for the dynamism of French-speaking African bloggers. A journalist who puts his own observations into well-selected articles extracts, photos and videos, Yoro creates an impression of life in the Ivory Coast, which is quite optimistic but without indulgence or smugness.”

The 29-year-old freelance journalist left regular journalism two years ago for blogging; and ever since his blog has been pulling thousands of visitors per month. Guebo believes blogging has broken the thick wall that existed between the voiceless and the authorities in Africa; and has encouraged citizen journalism to a great length.

He succeeded another African from the Republic of Congo, Cédric Kalonji, who won the 2007 edition in the same category.

The fifth edition of the BOBS Awards run by Deutche Welle was held recently in Berlin, Germany. Voices of Africa won the Best Video Blog. It was launched in 2003 by a group of German multimedia intellectuals.

It is the world’s largest international awards for Weblogs, podcasts and videoblogs. Since its inception four years ago, the BOBs have grown to include 11 languages. The winners of each year’s awards are decided by both an international jury of bloggers and through online voting.
