Malawi: Two journalists scoop award

    Two Malawian journalists have been adjudged winners of this year`s John Manyarara Investigative Journalism Award in South Africa. Charles Mpaka and Mike Chipalasa both work for Blantyre Newspapers Limited.

    They won the regional award organized by the Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa), for their impressive coverage on the country’s leakage of the Malawi School Certificate of Education last year.

    For coming out top, the two received 4,000 Euros from Misa, which was presented by its regional executive director Kaitira Kandjii. According to Malawi ‘s Daily Times website, this year’s awards attracted 30 entries from South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Kenya among others.

    Mpaka and Chipalasa last year also came out overall winners of the Malawi’s National Media Institute of Southern Africa (Namisa) award.

    According to the Daily Times, the award was named after the founder of MISA Trust Fund the late John Oliver Manyarara who fought tirelessly for press freedom in the Sadc region whilst a journalist and a lawyer before becoming a Zimbabwean High court Judge.
