The attack comes barely three days after another attempt on the driver of opposition leader Raila Odinga escaped a gun attack. Gunmen shot at Raila Odinga's private car along parliament road on Friday. The ODM leader was not in the vehicle during the incident.
Were was elected member of parliament for Embakasi in the December 27 election after wining the legislative vote.
Post-election violence has engulfed Kenya since the disputed December polls that placed President Mwai Kibaki of PNU ahead of Raila Odinga of Orange Democratic (ODM).
Violence has claimed over 1300 and over 500,000 have been displaced since its eruption. Kenyan Police have ruled out claims of assassination and appealed for calm.
ODM official Spokesperson Tony Gachoka has also appealed for calm as investigation.
"We are monitoring whatever is unfolding and we are convinced that this killing is suspicious considering how events have been unfolding in the recent past", says Gachoka.
The killing of Were has sparked a new wave of violence in Nairobi despite efforts by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to lead mediation efforts in Nairobi.
According to police spokesman Erick Kiraithe, Were, a member of Raila Odinga led Orange Democratic Movement, was waylaid at his residential home in Woodly estate adjacent to the sprawling Kibera slum.
The Orange Democratic Movement commands a majority in the house and has an advantage in controlling the legislative arm of Government with a majority.
Analyst have warned that the current wave of insecurity targeting legislators is bound to complicate the situation.
