The police attacked the mourners soon after Raila Odinga and his close collaborators had finished addressing the gathering. ODM leaders condemned the killings by police officers. Most of the protesters accused the police of provoking them to violence.
The action of the police have received condemnation from the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.
The violent attack comes barely hours before ODM members were set to hold talks with the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan who arrived in Nairobi to chair the mediation process aimed at ending the political impasse that has resulted to post-election conflict.
The opposition have already written to the ICC chief prosecutor demanding for the arrest and prosecution of police officers implicated in the killings. The chief mediator Kofi Annan has added his voice to the continuing violence and has called for calm and restrain.
The ODM has called for another series of country-wide protests to be held on Thursday.
