The bail application of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius will continue in the Pretoria Magistrate's court this morning. Yesterday Magistrate Desmond Nair ruled that the athlete be charged with premeditated murder, after his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp was found shot and killed at his upmarket Pretoria East home, last Thursday.
Pistorius's legal team now has a hard task ahead, as they would have to argue on exceptional grounds that he be granted bail.
Pistorius also gave his version of events on the fateful day, in a ten page affidavit that was read out in court. In it he stated that he loved Steenkamp, and had thought that she was a burglar. He added that he had felt vulnerable as he did not have his prosthetic legs on, when he heard a noise coming from the bathroom.
While this was read out in court Pistorius appeared to be an emotional wreck and sobbed in court each time Steenkamp's name was read out.
But as the proceeding continued in court yesterday morning, the family of Steenkamp laid her to rest in her hometown of Port Elizabeth. Several family members, friends and celebrities were present at the memorial service of the twenty nine year old model and law graduate. Her uncle then made an emotional statement, saying the not having Reeva present now leaves a gap.
