Sierra Leone: Libyan leader honoured

  1. Murtala Mohamed Kamara, AfricaNews reporter in Freetown, Sierra Leone
The Libyan leader Muammar Ghadafi has been honoured with an honorary Membership of parliament. Civil Society Movement (CSM) of that country urged the visiting Libyan Leader to apologise to the people for his alleged involvement in the Sierra Leone brutal war.
    Muamar Ghadafi
Prior to Ghadafi’s visit to Sierra Leone, the CSM in a statement said Ghadafi must now see reason and appeal to the people of Sierra Leone for supporting the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), one of Africa’s most feared rebel groups.

In his reaction the Libyan leader said in a statement from Tripoli denying supporting ‘’terrorist’’ but accepted that he has supported ‘’Freedom Fighters’’ including the ANC Nelson Mandela’s fight against apartheid.

Speaking to AfricaNews earlier in a telephone interview, the Hon. Eddie M. Turay majority leader of the ruling All People’s Congress in parliament said the honor bestowed on Ghadafi was just an indication of respect and Ghadafi’s support to the country.

He added that an important stranger like Ghadafi who is staying here for close to a week deserves to be honored. A political pundit described the honor as ‘’cheap’’ especially when it is coming from a body which is responsible for enacting the ‘’laws of our land’’

According to earlier report details of Ghadafi’s visit to Sierra Leone is still not clear even among government officials, but the Libyan leader has promised to reveal the aim behind his visit at the end of his one week stay.

It was reported that he only gave the ruling government less than 48hrs notice that he will be spending the New Year in Sierra Leone.

    SIERRA LEONE PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC LEAGUE

    PDL
    Email: freedomsal@yahoo.fr; changethesystem@hotmail.com; salpedel@caramail.com.

    Press Release 3rd January 2009.

Subject: « Libya did not support RUF rebellion in Sierra Leone ».

Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) is baffled by renewed assumptions that Libya supported the guerrilla campaign initiated by former Revolutionary United Front (RUF) led by Foday Sankoh. Normally it is never the policy of the PDL to argue on statements that are meant to serve individual self ego. But the fact that we in the PDL believe Brother Muammar Qathafi’s current visit in West Africa, particularly to Sierra Leone is part of our called for the Libyan leader to extend his country’s goodwill assistance to our people, and we believe he is in Sierra Leone to see for himself and get first hand information on what needed to consolidate peace, democracy and kick poverty out of the country. We believe the Libyan leader’s visit is right to prepare the ground so that whatever his country donates to Sierra Leoneans is properly managed and reaches the people, and not diverted again to line the pockets of rogue politicians in the country.

It is natural, and we owe it a duty as a responsible grouping to defend the presence of the Libyan leader on the Sierra Leonean soil, and counter any attempt to use this important visit to smear Brother Muammar Qathafi. It is clear that, Mr. Festus Minnah’s latest allegation re-echoes a similar one that was levelled at Libya by one time Special Court prosecutor, David Craine. There is no iota of truth in such dubious claims by David Craine or Festus Minnah that Libya under the charismatic leadership of Muammar Al-Qathafi trained, armed and funded former RUF guerrilla campaign in Sierra Leone.

Such baseless and unfounded allegations serve no purpose other than vitiating the Pan-African atmospheric condition and brother relationship that exist between Libya and Sierra Leone on one hand, and between the Maghred Union and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The allegation which is tantamount to libel against Head of State of a sovereign independent nation and member of the United Nations, is totally misleading and amount to duping the public.

It never fails to surprise any sane-thinking person how some Sierra Leonean politicians would vomit anything out of the way to get them in the news. We advise Mr. Festus Minnah and his ethnic based New People newspaper to make his research well and ascertain facts before jumping in the news and pointing fingers on Libya for the mess Sierra Leone finds itself today. One only wonders if the architects of this misguided allegation are nothing but baboons incarnated as humans.

Evidence abounds. Libya was not involved in the former RUF rebellion in Sierra Leone, and we call on Festus Minnah and the New People Newspaper to show credible proofs to justify his anti-Libyan motivated aggressive allegations. We challenge Festus Minnah and his parochial newspaper to disprove that no former RUF or Kamajoor, or Donso or even N’dorgborwusi fighter or Commander ever recruited, trained, armed or funded by Libya. That Libya had never and has not claim to have territorial ambition in Sierra Leone, as Liberia did in 1981 over Sulima Island, and the mystery over former Guinean dictator’s intransigent occupation of the Sierra Leonean town of Yenga and its surroundings.

We know there was a rebel group called the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) led by late Corporal Foday Saybanoh Sankoh. We know RUF fighters were Sierra Leoneans and trained inside Sierra Leone. We know the only RUF fighters never trained in Sierra Leone were those who were caught in the Liberian civil war, and came home to join Foday Sankoh’s led rebellion in the country.

Failing to produce evidence on his allegation against Muammar Qathafi, Mr. Festus Minnah would not only be held responsible for crafting a closet full of anti-Libyan manufactured lies, deceptions and slanders, but also stands indicted for deliberate attempt to sabotage Libya’s humanitarian and development assistance to Sierra Leone. This does not mean that Mr. Festus Minnah would escape charges at a Competent Court for his deliberate defamatory and libel statement made against the Libyan leader.

We warn Festus Minnah and his quack Newspaper to look for their problem with their countrymen within their country, rather than trying to have it logged onto Libya. The Jamahiriya has had nothing to do with domestic rebellions and break down of law and order, since the Sanda crises in 1982 to the Pujehun Ndorgbowusu rebellion in 1983, down to the RUF 10 year guerrilla campaign in Sierra Leone. The Government of Libya is well-known and has been prove by its continued support for peace, democratic good governance, human rights, rule of law, freedom and dignity on the continent, as well as the realisation of the pan-African vision of a United States of Africa.

It is our hope that the Government of Sierra Leone, led by President Ernest Bai Koroma values Libya’s efforts to advance the goals of the African Union and in particular, resolving issues of the West African sub-region. We also express our hope that Libya continues to extend its humanitarian and development assistance to Sierra Leone and its neighbours.

    Signed:…………………………………..

The Press Release was well articulated and undoubtedly touched on the issues of concern to the SLPDL regarding the situation in Guinea and the visit of the Libyan President to Sierra Leone . The demise of the ex-President, Lansana Conte and his dictatorship regime is long overdue and that has been the wish whether covertly or overtly of the international community, neighbors and more importantly the People of Guinea. Furthermore, the regime change was also needed for political stability and the consolidation of peace in the MRU states and the region as a whole. Although it shocks me to realize that the coup has attracted world-wide condemnation, we should at the same time cautiously welcome the coup leaders. Ex-President Lansana Conte took power on the same platform of a promise of change but once he consolidated his grip on power the good intentions vanished and were replaced by reckless despotism. I am not saying that the New Guinean President will tread on the same pathways as his predecessor but Coup Leaders according to trends and models has the tendency to perpetuate themselves in power and which invariably translates into brutal dictatorial regimes and socio-economic decadence for its peoples. The Coup Leaders no doubt have brought regime change to Guinea but whether the change will be a positive one only time will tell. To every generation in obscurity any change is welcome and I must say that the coup is a wonderful achievement-an achievement which the so called democracy has failed to produce. In fact, what does democracy really mean in countries where people are subjected to inhuman and degrading circumstances, where they would have to live in destitution, abject poverty and a bleak future. I am not surprised that the people of Guinea wholeheartedly welcomed the coup hoping that one day things will get better. If things should get better, the new regime should as a matter of urgency begin the much needed reforms and complete overhaul of the economy if they are to be judged as liberators and not share the destiny of their predecessor. I urge the Coup Leaders to be committed to their pledge of restoring the country to a genuine democratic civilian rule in 2010. The people of Guinea and the world are watching them and they will be judged accordingly.

Regarding the visit of Muamar Al Qadaffi to Sierra Leone it is a welcome one by every standard. We should rise above the blame game and let sleeping dogs lie. It has become very clear over the past years that the Libyan Leader has shown remorse over his role during the war in Sierra Leone and has matched that remorsefulness with tangible assistance to Sierra Leone . If imperialist powers like Britain and the USA are now cooperating with Libya what about Sierra Leone ? What is most important at this stage is to move away from the alms type of partnership to a more sustainable partnership that is development oriented. There are a lot of areas where as a nation we can forge a south-south partnership with the Libyan Government. Regarding the issue of payment of reparations, I’m not sure whether it is the right course of action at this point in time since the Libyan Government has not officially acknowledged complicity in the decade old brutal conflict. As earlier stated, there are a number of ways we can build productive and sustainable partnership with the Libyan Government since it is increasingly showing interest in the country in addition to his repentant posturing. What should be done in the immediate is to institute a Task Force of competent individuals who should develop through consultations a concept for a Sierra Leone-Libyan Partnership Programme This concept will then be discussed on a bilateral basis by both Governments and once agreed a board set up to facilitate implementation. The people of Sierra Leone have suffered for far too long and therefore this is the time for the leadership to have a forward looking approach to issues and avoid the blame game. The blame game will only deepen divisions in an already polarized nation……this by every account will be anathema to the development of our impoverish nation. I wish every Sierra Leonean a happy and prosperous 2009. Long live Sierra Leone and her people.

    "The Libyan Leader honoured"
I think that the best thing that any civilized nation or an individual can do is to appreciate and receive with sincerity of purpose those who extend to them friendship....I mean real friendship as Ghaddafi has already manifested. We should not shy away from the fact that he played some kind of a role in our decade old civil conflict but what we should appreciate as a nation is that he has supposedly shown remorsefulness and has matched that with the likeness he has for our country and the tangible assitance thereof. The Libyan Leader is a respected man world-wide and many countries will appreciate his presence in their midst and I think we should consider ourselves lucky. What is important at this stage is for us to forge a sustainable bilateral partnership with his country and try as much as possible to attract investment from Libyans.......which the Country at this material moment want more that anything else......this will put the the economy back on a sound footing and immensely benefit all Sierra Leoneans. There are a myriad of areas were we can work together and they range from agriculture, infrastructural development and oil to name but a few. I crave the indulgence of all and sundry that the blame game is not going to lead us anywhere but rather it will only futher divide an already polarised nation....so lets unite and encourage all friends of Sierra Leone to lend a helping hand at this difficult moment of need. Bravo to the Sierra Leonean Parliament for honouring a brother.

    SIERRA LEONE PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC LEAGUE

    PDL

Press Statement Date: 14 January, 2009.

    Email contacts: freedomsal@yahoo.fr; changethesystem@hotmail.com; salpedel@caramail.com.
    ___________________________________________________________
“Everyone is free to express and defend his or her views on all subjects, but everyone has a responsibility to remain within the bounds of criticism, with a respect for personal rights and without damaging the public order. It is inarguable that those who transgress these bounds will be prevented from doing so by the judiciary”.
    ______________________________________________________________
    Statement:

Subject: “ENOUGH WITH THE RED HERRINGS AND OBFUSCATIONS AGAINST LIBYA”.

The Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) has of late noticed that Sierra Leonean newspapers, particularly the pro-ethnic based « New People » has embarked upon the use of the technique of misleading the public to publish distressing, reckless, irresponsible, slanderous and misguided materials against Libya. Since the recent familiarisation tour of West Africa, by Libyan Leader Muammar al-Qathafi, shocking and invented headlines appeared in the New People newspaper: ““Shame on You, Merchants of Gaddafi” and “APC Red Carpet Welcome for RUF Godfather Provokes Civil Society Ire”
”. Those blaring headlines were followed in each case by an almost identical lead paragraph.

The Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) is affiliate member of the Green Charter International (GCI), for peace, democracy, human rights, rule of law, freedom and dignity, and as such believe there is need for the Organisation to respond to those outright lies, slander, hatred and bigotry the newspaper practices against Libya. Without doubt, many people, especially Africans on the continent and the Diaspora must feel embarrassed and distressed to read or hear the distorted, misguided and slanderous assault, in an attempt by the deceptive and prevaricator New People newspaper’s deliberate intent to cause offence to the Libyan Leader when the whole world already knows all the truth surrounding Sierra Leone’s bitter past. That newspaper has yet to accept the fact that the mess in which Sierra Leone finds itself today started with the bloody coup of 1967, two years before God Almighty used Muammar Qathafi to liberate the Libyan people from the shackles of Fascism, imperialism, pillage, plunder, Zionist terrorism, degradation and dehumanisation.

What is worrying and even sad for the media profession in Sierra Leone is that at a time people around the world are in tears as they watch through satellite television screens US backed Israel’s unending butchering of Palestinian infants, children, women, elderly and chronically ill-people, the New People newspaper bothers not to question the brutal holocaust campaign and ruthless violation of the Genocide Convention in Gaza, but chose to devote its most precious time on bellicose and petulant behaviour. We believe the pages of opinion and news sections of the New People should be seen in the forefront of exposing and condemning Israeli’s unending crimes against humanity instead of publishing malicious, dubious and libellous materials intended to divert public attention from the holocaust campaign against the Palestinian civilian population. We believe the editorial writers of that deceitful newspaper should question why the Palestinian population should be left to perish under US backed Israeli terror campaign, instead of throwing out obfuscations in order to satiate or titillate its readers. We believe also that the editorial writers of that paper should view the current protests around the world in solidarity with the hapless people of Palestine and question who arrogated unto the Zionist state, the right to invade and annexed foreign lands and territories; to kill, maim and destroy humanity when and where it decides, instead of indulging in a criminal behaviour that is so brazen in twisting words out of context to mislead people.

What is clear in the New People newspaper’s deceptive coverage about Libya’s Pan-African Project is not different from those ill-thought-out policies championed by the enemies of Africa. The Libyan Pan-African Project focuses on the realisation of a Union States of Africa built on the foundations of peace, stability and development. We are not sure why that newspaper chooses the recent visit to West Africa, by Muammar Al-Qathafi to pursue a vicious agenda.

The New People journalistic tactics do not come as any great surprise to the PDL. It only helped to expose that newspaper’s type of “Salamy” tactics of baseless accusation that is traditionally employed by Zionists to smear their opponents and suppress decent discussion. We want to make it crystal clear however, that the Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) will not allow these hate-filled propaganda and preposterous lies and deceptions to go unchallenged, and must be checked for veracity. It remains our policy not to bother irresponsible and reckless behaviours in the media. But for the sake of clarity, we would wish to re-visit recent anti-Libyan motivated misguided, slanderous, malicious and ridiculous publications in the New People newspaper, for the record.

    1. The New People Newspaper Online
APC Red Carpet Welcome for RUF Godfather Provokes Civil Society Ire.
    01.02.2009
FREETOWN:APA—Freetown [Sierra Leone] The honouring of Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gadaffi, last night, by the Sierra Leonean parliament, has provoked anger amongst certain sections of civil society and members of the public.
Col. Gadaffi, who is on a four day state visit to Sierra Leone, was on Thursday made honorary Member of Parliament, the first such happening in the parliamentary history of the West African state.
“This is unacceptable,” says the chairman of the Civil Society Movement, Festus Minah. “It is an insult to the people of Sierra Leone, especially the thousands that were killed or maimed during the country’s civil war.” READ MORE

PDL: It is not uncommon, not strange that Sierra Leone no matter who is in power extends her hands of friendship to welcome visiting foreign dignitaries on its soil with great respect and honour. It is part of the country’s culture, values and tradition.

The recent visit to the country by Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Al-Qathafi was not the first, as other foreign dignitaries like former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Nigerian Marshall dictator, the late General Sani Abacha once visited the country, and were given more than red carpet welcomed at least.

It is sad commentary that the New People designed stories or paid to do so against people they know nothing about except reading or hearing or culling stories about them from other equally corrupt media. It is a pity and hypocritical of the media to sit in judgement over others as the New People abounds with rude wordings, insinuations and vacuous nonsense against Libya. It is sad that the New People, which supposedly operating in an environment and atmosphere of democracy and decency, lacks the very innate capacity to reason well and question. Because, publishing irresponsible, reckless, misguided, ridiculous and misleading materials in the media is only practice in an atmosphere and environment where all norms and civilised standards of behaviours are abandoned for immorality.

To exhibit its hypocrisy and arrogant display of biased and ridiculous reporting against Libya, the New People has deliberately keep its readers ill-informed, misled and therefore no one is able to question the flamboyant and costly program that were organised by the then government of Sierra Leone, led by President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah to welcome the Nigerian maximum dictator, late Sani Abacha in 1998, and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in 2007. Can the New People dispute that Sani Abacha was never compensated with state property (like the Shell Refinery in Freetown) and Awarded Honour of “Father of Democracy” (the very principle the late dictator rejected in Nigeria as the opium of the people, and therefore not good for Nigeria). Can that paper deny that two prominent Streets in Freetown, Kissy Road and Kissy Street were renamed in 198 after Sani Abacha, something one cannot find in any corner of Nigeria, but in Sierra Leone, the SLPP and
former ethnic based guerrilla fighters in the provinces worshipped the late dictator as demi-god.

Can the malicious New People newspaper deny that Mr. Tony Blair was never compensated with an Awarded of Sierra Leonean Northern chieftaincy title of “Komrabai” and decorated with costly traditional consumes when he visited the country in 2007? Can Festus Minnah, who claimed to represent civil society groups in Sierra Leone deny that the first visit of the Libyan leader to Sierra Leone in 2007, he and other individuals never asked Muammar Qathafi for assistance on behalf of the people, including displaced, amputees, etc?

Where honesty prevails, the New people must appreciate the fact that throughout the two visits by the Libyan leader to Sierra Leone, Qathafi did not stopped at the Air Port outside Freetown, but came into the country and tour the interior where he met and shook hands with the locals. “The guilty are always afraid” says the adage. The Ten Million United States Dollars (US$10, 000 000. 00.) question is that, who is guilty and stands indicted, Tony Blair, Sani Abacha or Qathafi, of responsible for the misery the people of sierra Leone went through in the last one and half decade?

Muammar Al-Qathafi did not confined his visit to the country at the airport, as we Sani Abacha and Tony Blair did, but met with the people and he was given a powerful welcome everywhere he went in the country. But Sani Abacha and Tony Blair felt themselves unable to look the Sierra Leonean people in the eye, for the bad things they did to the country.

This kind of blatant media practice is completely unethical and extremely dangerous for the New People to indulge in. What we know and believe is that, that paper practices a kind of belief that says: “if there is smoke there must be fire”. The thinking is that if there is a controversy about someone, then chances are the allegations are true at least in part. This belief is completely nonsense.

    2. The New People Newspaper Online
TEXT OF Gaddafi's Speech in the Well of Parliament, Tower Hill, Freetown, Sierra Leone.
    01.04.2009
FREETOWN: NEW PEOPLE SOURCE - Editorial lead: The text of the speech is incomplete as our insider source did not get the entire speech (because of technical difficulties) and she could not take pictures in the house because of very tight security regulations. Gaddafi spoke at length about African unity and the need for Sierra Leone to ratify his notion of a united Africa that would be the antidote to western "imperialist exploitation" and bullying. The unedited transcript follows.
(In the name of Allah). First I would like to express gratitude and appreciation for the warm popular reception, I thank you for all the remarks I heard from members of parliament. READ MORE

PDL: It is common to read in the New People newspaper rude languages such as idiotic, stupid when referring to compatriots, particularly Sierra Leoneans presumed enemies of the SLPP. It is also on record that this paper even addresses fellow Sierra Leoneans not by their names but by mother tongue, and preaches rude tribalism in its proxy campaign of hatred against sections of the Sierra Leonean society.

Any sane person who may have read this article in the New People will observe the inaccurate and manipulation in that reports on Qathafi’s speech to the Sierra Leone Parliament. The whole reports in that paper tend to misinform and mislead its readers. It is understandable. The New People should not feel shy to accept the truth that Qathafi’s speech focused on promoting Libya’s Pan-African project and his country’s assistance to help the development process in Sierra Leone.

In attempt to cover-up a sinister agenda, and in a futile attempt to hide the internationally known truth, and continues to mislead its readers, the New People deliberately and shamelessly misrepresented Qathafi’s speech as attacking Britain’s hegemonic and imperialist terrorism in Sierra Leone. Under the circumstances, growing culture of disseminating misleading news of this nature, based purely on speculation and hatreds, will only create a state of confusion in the minds of Sierra Leoneans.

    3. The New People Newspaper Online
ZAINAB BANGURA & APC Government Support Gaddafi's Foreign Policy Goal to "Erase British Imperialist" Influence in Sierra Leone.
    01.05.2009
FREETOWN: JAMES OSAIO KAMARA - The promises and goodies have been flowing to the APC government: two shiploads of rice, 30 tractors, providing 36 classrooms and 10 scholarships for higher educational pursuits, the rehabilitation of the Islamic College in Magburaka, building a five star hotel, developing the hydro power sector, developing the air transportation and health sectors, providing a brand new ferry to ply the Sierra Leone river, and stimulating investments, among other things. The price is simple and uncomplicated, according to The New People's sources who were present at the meeting held between Sierra Leone government officials and the visiting Libyan head of state: "If Sierra Leone "unclutters" its foreign policy by "lessening" the "British imperialist presence," then Libya will increase its largesse even more for the APC government of President Ernest Koroma's APC government. Gaddafi is quoted to have also said that Sierra Leone, like all African nations, must undertake a "persistent self-reliance campaign which will see it use its natural resources to leverage its relationship with the "imperialist puppet strings." Britain currently provides substantial budgetary support, technical assistance, and training personnel for the multinational IMATT team. READ MORE

PDL: It is a good thing for conscious Sierra Leoneans to be wary of mercenary journalism and charlatans, deceivers of the public and heretics. The New People only believes in saying what it presumes and repeat “flying rumours” to cause mischief and malign others.

Libya has never claimed to be the “police man” of Africa to impose on others its own system. Libya, like any other country on the continent is a victim of international imperialist gangsterism. For the New People to suggest that Libya attempted to dictate the direction of Sierra Leone’s foreign policy is to say that late General Maxwell Khobe was never given the reign of “De facto Head of State” of Sierra Leone following immediately after the invasion of Freetown that led to the bloody overthrow of the AFRC junta in 1998.

The title of this editorial piece is deceptive, as the contents are blasphemous and not in anyway connected with the alleged Muammar Al-Qathafi’s meetings with government officials in Freetown. The New People is only interested in the “slanderous libel” tradition of detractors to Africa and makes this wild media coverage against Libya. This is totally laughable.

We want to remind the New People that Muammar Al-Qathafi is not a Fascist, and one hopes he takes immediate and appropriate steps to sue the malicious paper for slander.

    4. The New People Newspaper Online
THINK-TANK: Shame on You, Merchants of Gaddafi.
    01.07.2009
FREETOWN: UMARU FOFANA (PRESIDENT OF SLAJ- New People editorial lead: With the foreign and information ministers of the APC government billing Gaddafi's visit without notice as an honour for the country and on the eve of the largest massacre of the Sierra Leone was when Gaddafi-trained and sponsored insurgents and their allies massacred more than 6,000 Sierra Leoneans in a gory frenzy of killing, looting, rape, and arson, Umaru Fofana asks, should Sierra Leoneans buy this rendition and laundering of the Gaddafi image?
The Libyan leader, Col Muammar Ghadaffi started a 4-day visit to his “second home” of Sierra Leone on New Year’s Eve. His second home indeed! That’s how he referred to the country whose Truth and Reconciliation Commission report says he helped ravage by training and financing rebels who killed and maimed and pillaged. A report that recommended that he should admit his role in that internecine conflict and pay some form of recompense to the victims of his support to the RUF rebels! READ MORE

PDL: The Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) has time and again challenged anyone with proofs to indict Libya for supporting RUF rebellion in Sierra Leone. Even the authors of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) have until now unable to present one proof that Libya supported RUF rebellion in Sierra Leone. The report in the TRC that, the New People wanted its misinformed readers to buy against Libya was ill-calculated based on hearsay and mere assumptions.

Foday Sankoh and his RUF had never been in the good books of Libya. Besides, Libya was among African countries that condemned the May 25, 1977 coup of Major Johnny Paul Koroma and called the reinstatement of constitutional order in Sierra Leone. It is on record that Libya played a major role in the 1999 Lome Peace Accord, especially in providing the resources to bring the signatories of that Accord on the mahogany table. A role the former President of Togo, the late Gnassingbe Eyadema and other world leaders referred to as “boast for Africa’s capability to provide solution to the numerous problems plaguing the continent”.

There are more evidenced enough to indict former Prime Minister of Britain, Tony Blair for the following:

    1. Recruiting foreign mercenaries, from Europe, Canada, US, South Africa, Nepal, India, etc to cause mayhem on the Sierra Leonean population, and forcing the World Bank to bank-roll the maintenance of those mercenaries, who were hired and well paid in foreign currency to destroy Sierra Leone.

    2. Misusing British Taxpayers’ money to station Pirate Radio Station in the region, which was used by an ethnic based armed group in the countryside to incite violence, hatreds, malice and animosities amongst Sierra Leoneans.

    3. Illegal shipment of weapons (against international opinion) to an ethnic based terrorist group in the interior of Sierra Leone to commit the heinous crime of ethnic purification in the country. We ask the New People to read the reports by British Parliament on this issue.

    4. Helping to ruin the Sierra Leonean economy by supervising a criminal transaction involving Indian born Rakesh Saxene and leaders of an ethnic based terrorist group in the interior of Sierra Leone. It should be noted here that Rakesh Saxene signed a criminal deal with dubious Sierra Leonean exiled politicians at the headquarters of the Commonwealth in London. In that deal, Rakesh bankrolled the purchasing and illegal shipment of weapons valid Ten Million US Dollars (US$10, 000, 000.00) in exchange for Sierra Leone’s diamonds worth Hundred and Fifty Million Dollars (US$ 150, 000, 000. 00). Those weapons were used by the mercenaries and one ethnic based terrorist group in the country to cause havocs on people presumed are enemies and must be eliminated or maimed.

    5. Supporting the brutal invasion of Freetown in 1998 by hostile foreign mercenaries and local collaborators, and justifying the terror unleashed on the Sierra Leonean population as “Superb Job”.

The New People will appreciate that the General Sani Abacha died over ten years ago, but the blood of Sierra Leonean innocent lives continues to hunt him today in his grave. The New People must tell the Sierra Leonean why was the brutal executions of 24 Sierra Leoneans in October, 1998 and victims had their bodies thrown into drums of sulphuric acid before thrown into their graves.

From the above, it is clear that the New People Newspaper biased, unjust and propaganda terrorism, which is carried out under the cover of ‘freedom of expression’, is not only targeted towards smearing Muammar Qathafi, but also tailored to advance a politico-ethnic agenda in Sierra Leone. The remarks by some opposition politicians, particularly the Hon. Dr. Mrs Bernadette Lahai of Kenema (East of Sierra Leone), who is also representing the corrupt, ethnic centred and moribund Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) reinforced the malicious, fallacious and ridiculous propaganda to smear the Libyan leader, shows that the whole campaign against Libya is a concerted efforts by big party gurus of the SLPP for political gains. We would refer back to Dr. Bernadette to through the pages of the Sierra Leonean Constitution and tell the world which Section, Clause or Article in that national document that qualify Tony Blair to be honoured with the country’s
traditional chieftaincy title of “Komrabai”, or that simply justify the decision to allow a foreigner, General Maxwell Khobe became head of state of Sierra Leone after the counter coup against the AFRC junta led by the late Johnny Paul Koroma?

We take it upon ourselves to release this statement since we are not sure whether inventing lies, deceptions, conspiracies and misguided stories to smear the reputation of others is what is meant by freedom of expression. If the aim of the New People newspaper is to distort facts, or to deliberately disseminate malicious lies and stories to vilify Libya, it would be better for that paper and its allies, like the Standard Times to use ethics-based methods of reasoning. It would thus be better for the New People to allow reason confront reason in a democratic and logical fashion, in order to transform the culture of “disrespect” to a culture of “decency”, rather than spreading false information about others to advance illogical ethnic agenda in Sierra Leone.

We reiterate our position that: “Libya did not support RUF rebellion in Sierra Leone”. If any information to disprove our position, we challenge any person or persons with such in a public forum to clear all doubts.

For the heaven’s sake we appeal to the New People newspaper to advocate consolidation of peace and democracy in the country. It is not possible to blame others for the mess we Sierra Leoneans created for ourselves in the last three decades because of greed, rude tribalism and ethnic agendas, misdirection and backward mentality. There are countries, for instance Nigeria fought a brutal civil war but today no one conduct witch hunt against the other. Why we in Sierra Leone should not be thinking of moving forward as others are doing today, than indulging in activities that are not good for the development of the country.

Finally, we, in the Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) harbour no malice, hatred or grudge towards any in the New People, Standard Times or SLPP gurus or mercenary writers. The New People newspaper’s coverage of recent visit by Muammar Qathafi to West Africa is misleading, slanderous, ridiculous and misguided. An honest and objective assessment of that newspaper coverage and ranting by SLPP gurus provide damning indictment of the rotten politics of a group of traitors to the conscience of the people of Sierra Leone. The New People must be told honestly to stop its anti-Sierra Leonean motivated media campaign, inciting one ethnic group against the other. This is dangerous and unacceptable.

If there is nothing to write about in the New People Sierra Leonean media, we beg that at least let the ethics of the profession seen respected and practiced in the country.

    God help Sierra Leone!

    21 January, 2009.

Subject: « NARCOTIC DRUG CARTELS PLANNING TO DESTABILISE GUINEA ».

The Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) wishes to inform the international community, the United Nations, African Union (AU), European Union, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Organisation of the Islamic Conference, Non-Align Movement and all those who love and advocate freedom and dignity, about ongoing plans by a gang of top-rung businessmen including narcotic drug cartels and other criminals to subvert the sovereignty of Guinea with the sole intent to overthrow the Government of President Moussa Dadis Camara in Conakry.

We are reliably informed that since the Nigerian-manipulated ECOWAS harsh decision to ridicule the Guinean people for their support for the CNDD Government (National Council for Democracy and Development) led by President Dadis Camara, there has been meetings at Casamance region of Senegal where recruitment of rebels of the MFDC (Mouvement des forces democratiques de la Casamance) and other foreign nationals in the region is in high gear. Motive, quite simple, is to replace the Government of President Dadis Camara and return Guinea to its pre-CNDD era of political decadence, economic enslavement, indignities, immorality, opulence, rude tribalism, plunder, disunity, pillage, social chaos and narcotism.

Words cannot express our indignation at this credible and undeniable information, and the threats posed by big-time narcotic drug cartels and other criminals on the current peace, stability and national cohesion which the people of Guinea enjoy under the leadership of President Dadis Camara and which was absence in the former regime of the late dictator Lansana Conte. There is no doubt that the enemies of the Guinean people are working tirelessly to destabilise the CNDD’s program of helping to lay the foundation for a New, Peaceful, Democratic and Stable Guinea, through credible transition process. We express grave concern at this dangerous development and wish to condemn strongly any subversive plan to overthrow the Government of President Dadis Camara by force or coup.

While we offer full support for the determination of the CNDD Government to restore Guinea’s lost dignity, we warn that any attempt to destabilise the current peace and tranquillity in the region would be considered a savage act of criminality against humanity. It would be resisted not only by Guinean security, but also by the people as well as friends of Guinea.

We demand that the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council to prevail upon all countries that border with Guinea, including Guinea Bissau, Senegal, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ivory Coast not to allow their territories become recruiting or training or staging posts to destabilise the West African nation. The CNDD Government is not a coupist administration, and it is the only competent authority responsible for defending and protecting Guinean life and property.

We will not sit idle while narcotic cartels, forces driven by criminal, beastly and retrogressive ideas replace governments in the ECOWAS region with narco-leaders. They are our common enemies in West Africa and ones who seek nothing but the destruction of the future of Africa by sniffing our younger generation with the killer substance. President Dadis Camara’s Government determination to repair Guinea’s tainted image in the international community and ensure security of all people in that country should be supported by those who seek peace, freedom and progress for Africa.

By this Statement, the Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) wishes to call upon the media (print and electronic media) across Africa and beyond to launch a campaign against plans by narcotic drug cartels to destabilise Guinea to regain lost influence in government. We believe the media, through their collective, concerted and common editorials and opinions are capable of pricking the conscience of the international community for the need to support the CNDD’s genuinely commitment towards fighting and winning the battle against the drug menace in Guinea, and to break down the distribution point where drugs from Colombia are redistributed for smuggling into Europe and the United States through ECOWAS territories.

We urge the CNDD Government not to relent its widely welcomed decisions and efforts aimed at restoring the lost dignity of the Guinean people after 24 years of degradation and dehumanisation. Nigerian-manipulated ECOWAS insensitivity to the plight of the Guinean people should not frustrate any efforts of transforming Guinea into a truly democratic state. We saw in the past how 50 (Fifty) ECOWAS citizens from Ghana were brutally murdered in The Gambia and thrown into the deep sea in 2005, while ECOWAS took silence position on the matter.

The writing on the wall is clear. ECOWAS false starts and poor judgement of the situation in Guinea is not a secret. We can understand Nigeria’s position and its attempts to hide behind ECOWAS, to use the Guinean situation to save face for its own domestic crises, characterised by the imposition of a fraudulent government on the people. If anything, we advise that Nigeria learn from Ghana’s democratic experience on how to conduct peaceful, honest, transparent and democratic elections before dictating to the Guinean people the direction of their country.

    Long live the Guinean Republic!

    Solidarity with the Guinean people!.

    1st February 2009.

Subject: “PDL ADVOCATES PEACE, STABILITY AND GUARANTEE SECURITY IN THE MRU-SUB-REGION.

The Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) wishes to issue this Press Release regarding the Yenga crises and to proffer a durable solution towards ending the issue on the mahogany table.

From our current investigation it appears that enemies of the CNDD Government of President Moussa Dadis Camara in neighbouring Guinea are bent on creating a scenario ostensibly to liberate Yenga from the occupation of late President Lansana Conte’s lawless regime. Such overt and covert plan would only mean plunging the region into another mess, which we believe should be averted by all domestic and foreign stakeholders for the sake of peace, stability and progress.

Much as the Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) advocates peace, stability and guarantee security in the sub-region, the demise of the lawless regime provides a platform to resolve the Yenga issue amicably, and we believe the Government of President Dadis Camara should be trusted as a partner in peace and development in the region. The CNDD ha since its inception, not claimed Yenga as part of Guinea, instead President Dadis Camara has reiterated his Government’s determination to repair the havocs its predecessors have caused for the Guinean people and to a larger extend to live in peace and harmony with its neighbours. For any attempt to incite policies based solely on misguided beliefs towards the New Guinea under President Moussa Dadis Camara would only sow the seeds of hate and instability, with no solution achieved in the end on resolving the Yenga issue.

For the sake of peace and progress, and for promoting the goals of Pan-Africanism, we call upon the Government of President Ernest Bai Koroma in Freetown to resist any temptation of being dragged by rogue forces to launch attack on neighbouring Guinea in the name of liberating Yenga. We demand that President Koroma assures our neighbours in Guinea that Sierra Leone, under his leadership would not be used by drug cartels and other enemies of Guinea and apostles of the late Conte’s fascist rule to recruit, train, arm and marshal terrorist gangs to violate Guinea’s territorial integrity in a covert plot to overthrow the Government of President Dadis Camara. We demand also that the Government of President Bai Koroma assures the international community its goodwill to dialogue with its Guinean counterpart to resolve the Yenga issue peacefully.

We believe that the demise of the former fascist enclave in Guinea was a divine intervention so that MRU leaders will now see each other as partners in peace, elimination of poverty, provision of food, shelter and jobs to all, ensuring security of life and guarantee essentials such potable water, electricity and social services. As for the CNDD Government’s determination to fight and win the battle against illicit drug trade and stop Guinea from being used as transit point to proliferate narcotic drug trafficking in the region as well as smuggling the killer powder to Europe, America, the Middle East and Asia, we believe the Governments of Sierra Leone Liberia and Ivory Coast must not miss the opportunity the CNDD has created, to devise on effective strategy to overcome the spread of the illicit market, which is posing a dangerous threat in our countries.

We believe war with the New Guinea in the cover of liberating Yenga would only benefit narcotic drug traders and cronies of the former fascist enclave, and multiplying the problems faced by our people in the region without solving one of them. The opportunity has been created now to resolve the Yenga crises peacefully without hurting the people of the two countries, Guinea and Sierra Leone, and for this, we call on the Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Al-Qathafi to mediate and help resolve the Yenga issue once and for all.

We have documented information of those anti-CNDD criminals who are behind the pressure on the Government of President Bai Koroma to use force against the CNDD now, and regain Yenga from the occupation of late Conte’s forces. We know the agendas of these criminals in the region. Their only gift to the MRU region (Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Ivory Coast), of course to the entire continent is suffering and misery for Africans. After all, we advise President Bai Koroma to take stock of past events and make an objective analysis of documented facts and understand that Sierra Leone priority now should be transforming the country to become once again the food basket of West Africa.

    Long live MRU Solidarity!

    Signed:

    ALIMAMY BAKARR SANKOH

    SIERRA LEONE PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC LEAGUE

    PDL

Public Release Statement 3 February, 2009.

Subject: “PDL Congratulates new Chairman of African Union”.

With profound delight, we, members and supporters of the charismatic Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL) at home and abroad issue this public statement to congratulate Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Al-Qathafi on his election as the new chairman of the African Union (AU).

Since the transformation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and its replacement with the African Union (AU) in 2000, we have followed with keen interest Colonel Qathafi’s tireless efforts aimed at achieving the vision bequeathed to Africans by our fore heroes, including Osagyfo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Patrick Lumumba, Abdel Nasser, Steve Biko, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Junior, etc, for a United States of Africa that is based on peace, stability, freedom and dignity for all black peoples on the planet. The election of the Libyan leader as chairman of the AU is no doubt the right choice for the noble job at this time.

The African Union has to remain relevant and we are confident in the ability of Muammar Qathafi to pilot the continental body to a greater height and respect.

Muammar Qathafi is a man who advocate and fight for peace, human freedom and dignity, and his wise, visionary and progressive leadership role-model on the continent has displayed remarkable potential. We believe strongly that his new responsibility as AU chairman will go along way to offer good leadership by example for others coming after him to follow.

We, in the Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL have a proud history of not hiding behind curtains to publicly-expressed concern for peace, good governance and progress based on democracy, human rights, rule of law, freedom and dignity. It is therefore remiss if we did not express our grateful appreciation to the CNDD (National Council for Democracy and Development) Government of President Moussa Dadis Camara in Conakry, for its timely intervention to save Guinea, and of course the entire West African sub-region from sliding into cataclysmic wars. Our desire for peace, stability and progress extends to our most ignored, robbed and cheated neighbours in Guinea.

In our honest view, under the wise and purposeful guidance of the Libyan leader, the African Union and other misled Organisations will understand facts about the situation in Guinea, which the international media and detractors are trying to cover up distort and deceive the public. While we condemn the international community for allowing itself to be duped by the false rhetoric of democracy and to subject its position on Guinea to the designs and tastes of rogues, we see it not too late to reverse such unjust and ill-fated policy against the Guinean people.

We urge Africans everywhere to stand up for the mother continent and say no to isolation of Guinea. We must unite in condemning neo-colonial activities on the continent.

We end this statement with prayers that, God Almighty may grant Colonel Qathafi wisdom, courage and protection in his AU chairmanship. We also pray for all those conscious African leaders who are readily prepared to work with Colonel Qathafi to ensure the success of the African Union.

    Long live the AU!

    Signed:

    Alimamy Bakarr SANKOH

Chairman and leader of the Sierra Leone People’s Democratic League (PDL)

Leader Moamer Khadafi has been making world headlines again and to many insightful minds i.e. Pan-Afrikan thinking minds, for all the right reasons.

Khadafi appears to follow the ambitions of previous Afrikan leaders such as Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba, Jomo Kenyatta and even the earlier and more credible version of Robert Gabriel Mugabe. It is even fair to comment that the Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez is a supporter of the Pan-Afrikan movement and is making efforts to reconnect Afro – Latin Americans with their African heritage.

I will get to the subject of Sierra Leone in due course but let us firstly consider the reason behind all the recent media furore over the movements of Khadafi and more importantly, the current Afrikan Summit of leaders taking place in Addis Ababa. The presence of Khadifi at this summit has been whipped into hysteria as the discussion of a United States of Afrika is once again being banded about on a prominent stage playing host to many powerful leaders, dignitaries and the world media.

The formal concept of Pan-Afrikanism initially developed outside of Afrika in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It developed as a reaction to the impact of European colonialism in Afrika on peoples of Afrikan descent. In the mid-20th century, activists in Afrika adopted Pan-Afrikanism as a rallying cry for independence from colonial rule.

Some Afrikan Pan-Afrikanists sought to unite the continent as one independent nation. From these origins and objectives, Pan-Afrikanism developed in two basic forms:

    1. In one form, known as Continental Pan-Afrikanism, it advocates the unity of states and peoples within Afrika, either through political union or through international cooperation.

    2. In its other, broader form, known as Diaspora Pan-Afrikanism, it relates to solidarity among all black Afrikans and peoples of black Afrikan descent outside the Afrikan continent.

Developed and interpreted by thinkers, authors, and activists around the world, Pan-Afrikanism was actively discussed and proposed within politics since the late 1700's but became much more publicised around the 1960's, just before and after colonial 'handover' to key Afrikan leaders.

Pan Afrikanism faced a politically exciting and challenging time during the post colonial era for any observer. With the increasing battle between communist and capitalist governments for stronger influence on the global stage, could it be that the fate of the leaders mentioned above, were sealed in what was/is a much larger picture, sponsored by American and past Soviet Governments?

Following this, it is now important to establish whether the new generation of Afrikan leaders both on the continent and the diaspora, believe in Pan Afrikanism and establish whether it is a 'beneficial' or 'dangerous' movement to support both within Afrika and Western Governments.

You are already hearing reports of South Afrika being reluctant to make speedy progress towards a union of the Afrikan states, claiming economic and monetary reasons. Is it the interests of the Boers being upheld by the African leadership that fronts to the world as independent but are maintaining the wealth of their regime in post Apartheid Azania?

From a true Pan-Afrikanist point of view, a United States of Afrika must focus on what underpins any country or continents route to obtaining their own true autonomy and power. Therefore challenging issues regarding land and agriculture, mining and the rise of 'infrastructure grants in return for mining concessions', which is a tool being used by both international Governments and private business in countries such as Nigeria, Angola, the Congo, Sierra Leone and so on, to gain a foothold of the continents rich mineral and oil resources.

One thing I notice watching and reading media coming out of countries like Nigeria, Angola, Sierra Leone, is that the current governments see these deals being done, as political feathers in their party's cap, everyone being a winner and foreign investment pouring into the country with the added bonus of having the roads and municipal buildings being built and upgraded for 'free'..not a bad deal if you can get it eh?...surely our leaders know the score though, c'mon!

Writing in the 60's, the late Dr Nkrumah was well aware of these 'development policies' (which encompasses the said business deals currently going on) targeted towards the Afrikan continent by international private corporations and governments, yet he made sure that Ghana was never sold short.

I urge people to read a bit on how Chavez is dealing with the issue of bringing investment into Venezuela and at the same time not losing anything of the countries power and autonomy i.e. its natural god given wealth in land, agriculture, minerals, oil and so on.

So with Afrika's own power and autonomy ( yep, its oil, land, agriculture, minerals, sea's), being leased and licensed and ultimately owned by the international community in front of the very eyes of many of the continents beaming and proud 'pot bellied' leaders..is it not clear that something is going amiss?

I keep saying this but it was literally just 4 decades ago, only 4 decades ago that conscious Pan Afrikan leaders in North, South, East and West Afrika were standing in front of international delegations in the Ghana, Cairo, Addis Ababa, the Hague, Paris and Geneva, confidently and triumphantly proclaiming the need for a United States of Afrika! Small but bold steps were taken and unions started to emerge with the formation in 1963 of the OAU the Organisation of African Unity. This was a strong and true union of significant Afrikan leaders and given a chance, this could have been the start of great steps towards the United States of Afrika.

However a series of wars over a couple of decades saw many states fall out with each other, pull out of the union which eventually saw its demise and this was rubber stamped in the next generation of Afrikan leaders such as Thabo Mbeki who disbanded the OAU in 2002 and replaced with the much watered down (in policy and political ambition), AU Afrikan Union. The AU receives a significant amount of multilateral development funding from the international community and indeed has the international donor community to thank for it 'sparkly new offices' in Addis Ababa..ah the irony!

I believe that what ever wrongs or rights have been perpetrated by Khadafi in the past, surely the fact is if the west is made up of many hard handed leaders, surely the way to counter this imbalance is to make sure that respective Afrikan countries are represented by strong leaders, not scared to say no to international manipulation and meddling? And if this process needs to be kick started by Khadafi then by all means I am in favour of him strutting around the continent and the world, giving voice to what is increasingly becoming a 'second rate topic' (United States of Afrika), in the eyes of the oppressor.

At least Khadafi is one of the continent's longest-serving leaders, who has for years pressed for a federal pan-regional government, arguing that it is essential to meet the challenges of globalisation, fight poverty and resolve conflicts without Western interference.

Please your thoughts are most welcomed.

    Sincerely

    Ahmed Deen Turay
