A day at Labadi Beach in Accra

    For a pathetic swimmer, I couldn't really figure out why I was so attracted to the Labadi Pleasure Beach. I knew it was not the overweight chics who force themselves into skimpy bikinis, neither was it the pot-bellied fellows who haven't looked in the mirror in the long while.

    Of course I didn’t go there to watch the tide rise and fall, so “What about this beach to attract me?” I kept wondering till I discovered Shirley. She was the manager of one of the spots on the beach.  As I pulled up a seat one hot Saturday afternoon to order a bottle of coke, she called me by name to my amazement. Noticing how stupefied I was, she politely asked me if I wasn’t one of those mean seniors at Temasco? Fortunately, she bore me no grudge. Actually, we had a common interest: the beach, and with each visit, my new mentor and guide opened my eyes to the Labadi Beach visitors don’t see. In no time, Shirley had taught me to I identify the pimps, the pimped, the gigolos, the gays, the pushers and the unsuspecting families and lovers who came to enjoy the beach every weekend, unaware to it all. So what so attracts me to the beach? The answer is simple. “Every visit is a totally different experience”.  And it is some of these experiences I want to share with you through these photographs.
