The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon trashed their Mauritius Island folks 5-0 over the weekend in the joint World and African Cups` qualifiers. It was a splashing game for the experience Cameroon side at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde. Goal poacher Eto`o opened the score sheet in the 26th minute.

The game was more or less a goal festival for the boys of German football technician and Cameroon’s trainer, Otto Pfister, 70. Having employed an all-professional team of 22 men, Pfister, certainly, was going in for big business. Nothing will be left to chance, especially as the Lions had already picked qualification ticket into the third and crucial phase of the joint ACN/World Cup 2010.

With an-always diesel-engine-like-touch to their games, the Cameroonian team began the match in a very calm but observant mood. As they will progress to organize their game and get to know their opponents better, greater things will soon start to happen. At the 26th minute of the match, the Lions’ leading scorer, who trades his professional know-how at the Spanish La Liga, with FC Barcelona, Samuel Fils Eto’o got the back of the net. He now has five goals to his credit.

Cameroon put a lot of style and finesse into their game plan. They wasted many scoring opportunities. The situation did not change in the first half until referee, Ould Lemghambodj Mohamed blasted his whistle after 45 minutes of play.

    Second half

Albert Meyong Zé replaced Achille Emana in the second half. The former came in pepped. He liaised with Eto’o so well that a beautiful connection between the two led to a penalty in favour of the Indomitable Lions at the 46th minute of play. Eto’o took the penalty, beat the Mauritian keeper to the opposite direction and netted the second goal for Cameroon. The Barça striker was now six goals up. He lost many chances that came his way.

Meyong Zé, once more reminded his Cameroonian fans and those across the world that his scoring spree is still very much intact. The Portuguese-based player headed in for Cameroon the third goal at the 56th minute. It was a smooth right-flank pass from another distinguished player in the Cameroonian team, Geremi Njitap, team captain at English Premier side, Newcastle.

Jean II Makoun, Cameroon’s midfielder at Olympique Lyonnais in France, was just in a good shape for the game. He had control of the Cameroonian midfield and this will be completed in grand style with a 70th minute goal, from a header still, thanks to a corner kick. Two minutes later, the daring Zé would once more reappear into the limelight, which is the 72nd minute, when he stylishly slotted in the 5th goal for the Lions. A very relaxed Cameroonian team continued the match until the end.

With the second phase of the joint eliminatories now something of the past, the third phase would begin after the draws on Wednesday, October 29 at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. This is the time football enthusiasts across the African continent and beyond will distinguish the boys from the men.
