Controversial Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga's former adviser Miguna Miguna, whose newly launched book 'Peeling Back The mask' has kicked up a storm in the east African nation, left the country on Tuesday night, as the police officers descended on his residence in search of him. The book has elicited sharp reactions both in his favour and against him in equal measure.
According to sources close to him, Miguna left the country on a world-wide tour to popularise his book. He is said to have left with his family to Canada via Netherlands.
Miguna Miguna's book paints a picture of contrasts of the Raila that people know, and the one that is allegedly involved in corruption and his involvement in the post election violence that rocked Kenya, after he (Raila) contested the election results.
In the boo, Miguna alleges that Raila was behind the strategy of the Orange Democratic Movement, a party that he leads, to isolate the Kikuyu community from the rest of the 41 ethnic communities that make up the Kenyan society. He also indicates that members of the ODM wing of the Kenyan grand coalition were involved in various scandals including that of maize, water and NHIF, where millions of dollars were lost.
Early on Monday, the Kenyan Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Keriako Tobiko, had directed the Police Commissioner to force the author to record statements with the police on what he knew on the post poll violence. Other members of ODM have also called on the police to arrest and prosecute Miguna for defaming the Prime Minister.
So emotive has the book been that villagers from his native Ahero Township where Miguna was born burnt his effigy, as they demonstrated against him. They also carried his symbolic coffin, which they burnt and spread the ashes in Lake Victoria.
It is not known whether he will come back to Kenya or not, although he had told the Kenyan media that his life was in danger before leaving quietly. he had said that he had been receiving threatening messages and some people had been trailing him within Nairobi.
